Every year, as August arrives, a part of me wants to hold onto every last bit of summer, while another part can’t help but get excited about the fresh start that fall always seems to bring.
In Chinese philosophy, August represents a subtle energetic pause—a quiet transition from late summer into fall. It’s the moment between summer’s expansive Fire energy and autumn’s reflective Metal energy. During this shift, it’s natural to feel a little scattered. Routines begin to change, schedules tighten, and life can feel as though it’s changing pace.
This transitional season is governed by the Earth element, whose role is to steady us and keep us centered when everything around us shifts. Earth reminds us that stability isn’t found by resisting change, but by finding our footing as we move through it.
I experienced this lesson firsthand just a few weeks ago. A close friend of mine had made the difficult decision to leave Denver and move back home to Maine after navigating a series of personal challenges. I had the privilege of being her co-pilot for the cross-country journey.
Before we left, she was overwhelmed by the endless details that come with closing one chapter and beginning another. But something remarkable happened once we started driving.
As the miles stretched behind us, I watched the weight she had been carrying slowly lift. The farther we traveled, the more I saw her true self return. She became relaxed, funny, and present again. We spent our days laughing, getting lost in conversation, taking photos beneath every state welcome sign, and buying lottery tickets at every gas station we stopped at. We never won, but imagining that we might was part of the fun. What struck me most was that her peace returned long before we reached Maine. It came the moment she stopped focusing on everything she was leaving behind and began looking toward what lay ahead.
It reminded me that sometimes transition itself is what creates stability.
When life feels uncertain or frustrating, it’s easy to believe things will never change. Yet, often the greatest change begins the moment we gain clarity about where we’re going.
Is there an area of your life where you find yourself standing between one season and the next?
Most of the time, we have an intuitive sense of what we would like to see unfold – a direction or a goal that helps us move through transitional seasons with more ease. Here are some simple reflections to help you feel more grounded during those times:
- Create one daily anchor – Choose one simple ritual that brings consistency to your day.
- Stay Focused on the next right step – Simply ask yourself, what is the next right step?
- Welcome what’s ahead – Instead of dwelling on what’s ending, take a moment to appreciate the new beginning that is preparing to emerge
This month, lets embrace the space between what was and what is becoming, trusting that there is wisdom in the pause and strength in the movement.
In wellbeing,
Betsy
