I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving!

I’ve been doing my daily gratitude list that we talked about last month, and it’s really helped me stay grounded. Still, there are moments when I catch myself wondering: Why does everything continue to feel so hard?

We begin December with an elemental transition from the structured essence of Metal to the more fluid and introspective energies of Water. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), these elements are more than just physical substances. They serve as metaphors for how we live, and being in harmony with the seasons is essential to our wellbeing.

As winter settles in, we’re invited to embody the gentle qualities of Water: to soften, rest, and reflect. It’s a time to nourish ourselves by remembering to slow down, stay fluid, and release the urge to force outcomes before their time.

I recently listened to a meditation about a man who was really struggling in life. In his pain, he tried to force things to happen that he thought would make him happier. Then, an injury to his leg compelled him to slow down his pace. At first he felt defeated. But in the stillness, he began to notice what he had been missing—the beauty and abundance that were already present. The teacher explained, “We act as if we can bargain with life, but in the end we are only asked to soften.”

The message of this meditation touched me deeply, and it beautifully mirrors the wisdom of Water—reiterating the power of softening and flowing with life rather than resisting it. This season, I intend to embrace that advice by reminding myself to honor rest, remain fluid, and share in the quiet magic of the holidays.

My Favorite Holiday Hack? Joy Snacks

A few months ago, we explored the idea of “Joy Snacks”—small, intentional gestures that spark joy and shift our energy. These simple little practices have really helped me reclaim my optimism when it started to fade. Little by little, I have been able to get a grasp on things. It feels good to embrace the joy of the season, and I wanted to share a few of my favorite ideas with you:

  • Visit the Christmas Market – immerse yourself in the holiday spirit

  • Do an ornament exchange – create memories with meaning

  • Bring a meal to an elderly neighbor – nourish connection

  • Buy and wrap a toy – brighten a child’s holiday

  • Donate to a local food bank – experience the joy of giving

It’s the season of giving, the season of joy. Let’s choose to bask in the graceful fluidity of it all. Wishing everyone a happy, healthy holiday season!
