A couple of years ago, Five Wellbeing rolled out a few different services that include cannabidiol (CBD). Since that time, we have had a few questions about what is CBD, how does it work with my massages and what are the benefits? Let’s take a moment to give you some insight.

What Is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is an extracted oil that comes from the hemp plant. Unlike CBD that is found in hemp’s cousin marijuana, CBD that derives from the hemp plant does not have any psychoactive effects. In fact, The World Health Organization even reports that CBD does not cause harm or have any no known adverse effects towards public health (World Health Organization 2020).  CBD CAN have some tremendous positive benefits on health, however, which is why we added some services that now include it.

How Does CBD Work?

CBD is one of the cannabinoids within the hemp plant that is easily received by the human endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoids system (ECS) is a component of our nervous system and is the master regulator of homeostasis within the human body. ECS ensures that the brain and body work together to regulate immune functions, digestions, hormones, pain centers, and metabolic functions (Nazarenus 2019). The ECS system contains two receptors to naturally receive cannabinoids that are produced by the human body. CBD mimics some of these naturally occurring endogenous cannabinoids, aiding the system in maintaining homeostasis.

What Are The Benefits of CBD?

Pure CBD derived from the hemp plant is providing a number of health benefits to those that include it in their self-care regimens. At Five Wellbeing, we share the benefits of CBD by adding it to massage oils and other treatment products. A few of the health benefits reported are (Grinspoon 2021):

  • Reduced inflammation
  • Relieve muscle and joint pain
  • Anxiety management
  • Improved sleep
  • Reduced tension
